Q & A for new swimmers and parents

girl swims

What is the time commitment?

The team swims everyday, in two groups: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm, and 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm. At the start of the season, the coaches will let you know the time your swimmer should attend. Swimmers age 13 and up can attend morning swim and dry land training (times to be announced). In an effort to accommodate swimmers with summer jobs, evening swims will be available (times to be announced).

What is dry land training?

Dry land training is conditioning for the swimmers outside the pool. Younger swimmers have a fun dry land such as playing soccer or games. Older swimmers have a more serious workout. Sessions are usually held at the Kinsmen Field or the Bridgewater school gym (times to be announced).

What if we are away on vacation or can't come every single day?

Coaches realize summer is short, and families take vacation so it is understandable that swimmers will be away from time to time. Daily swimming is encouraged, of course.

What if my child joins but does not enjoy the team?

The club has an intro swim session to introduce the swimmer to the coaches, and take them through some typical activities. This session should give your child an idea of what the team is like.

When is the Intro Swim Session being held?

The intro swim session is usually held at the Bridgewater Pool during the last week of June (date to be announced).

Will my swimmer have to try-out to join?

Try-outs have been required in the past due to large numbers wanting to join. In recent years, the membership has remained fairly steady, and try-outs were not necessary. If try-outs are required, it will be explained at the intro session.

How many meets should each swimmer attend?

Meets are open to all members, regardless of ability. Only provincial championships require time standard qualification. Swimmers can attend as many meets as they like. Meet attendance is definitely encouraged by coaches so the swimmer can gain confidence and experience.

Is it mandatory to purchase Cuda Bathing Suits or clothing?

No. Cuda clothing is optional. The Cuda bathing suits are a high quality Speedo brand, that stands-up better to the chlorine.

How much does it cost to join the team?

Swim fees change slightly from year to year based on number of swimmers, and the cost to rent the pool. In 2006, the fee was $150 for the first swimmer, $140 for each additional swimmer. Fees are announced at the start of the season.

What is the expectation of parent involvement in the team?

The Barracudas have social activities for the swimmers, run time trials for swimmers, host a swim meet, and do some fund raising. The philosophy of the team is that swimmers benefit when parents/guardians become involved, so anytime a parent can help out, it is welcomed and encouraged. For more on the Cuda Philosophy, click here.

Do the Barracudas host a swim meet?

Yes. The swim meet is usually held in July at the Bridgewater Pool. Parent volunteers are requested to help with set-up of grounds, canteen, timing, and on deck assistance if available. Many hands make light work, and our meet is one of the most successful of the season, due to the dedicated parents who help out. In August 2006, the Barracudas hosted the 2006 Summer Swimming Championships.

How much fund raising is involved?

For the club to be able to purchase equipment, and to balance the budget, some fund raising takes place during the year. Annual fund raising events include, Canada Day Color Game, and grocery bagging in August. If parents volunteer for even one activity, it will help the club and most events are fun and medium effort.

What is the fund raising money used for?

The club funds initiatives such as the Mentor Program, and recently purchased an electronic starting system.  In times of fiscal health, the club registration fees remain the same from year to year.

Who can I call if I have other questions?

What is the Swimming Mentor Program?

The Swim Club offers a unique Swimmer Mentor Program, open to swimmers age 15 and up. Goals of the program are:

  • develop leadership skills;
  • develop coaching techniques;
  • build confidence

More info on the Mentor Program will be available during Training Camp, late June, 2007.

Bridgewater Barracudas Swim Club philosophy

The Bridgewater Barracudas Swim Club exists to promote and develop competitive swimming for the youth of Bridgewater and surrounding area during the summer months.

The philosophy of the Swim Club is based on competitiveness, sportsmanship and fair play. It is hoped that through training and coaching, swimmers will improve their level of skill and enjoy the benefits of being part of a team.

The club believes swimmers benefit where there is direct involvement by parents/guardians. To this end, it is an expectation of the club that there be a significant level of support from parents/guardians during the swim season.
